The pain and discomfort caused by damaged nerves can be relentless. Neuropathy produces a constant burning, prickly, tingly sensation — usually in the hands or feet.
Although damaged nerves do heal naturally over time, it is a slow process. In most cases, it takes weeks and months before the painful symptoms recede.
The options for treating nerve damage are somewhat limited. For severe pain, there is big-pharma prescription pain medication, such as gabapentin. Over-the-counter pain medications such as Aleve and ibuprofen provide some temporary relief. But these medications also put quite a strain on the liver and kidneys, if used over the long term.
Neuropathy creams have the advantage of being applied directly to the affected area. So topical creams like Penetrex provide targeted, local relief to neuropathy symptoms — something oral medications can’t do.
The major disadvantage is that it merely treats the symptoms — the pain. These treatments don’t do anything to help the nerves themselves regenerate and heal. Ultimately, this is what must happen for nerve pain to go away forever. Unfortunately, with nerve damage, it’s mostly a waiting game.
Vitamins can help regenerate damaged nerves
Another way to treat the symptoms of neuropathy is with vitamins. It is well-established that vitamin B deficiency is a direct cause of burning and tingling sensations in the nerves.
Nerve damage caused by long-term alcoholism is most closely associated with vitamin B deficiency. Vitamin B is water-soluble. It flushes out of the body when alcohol and its byproducts are processed. For alcoholics especially, chronic low levels of vitamin B can cause nerve damage.
If you suffer from neuropathic pain, it’s a good idea to supplement your diet with these vitamins. And this applies whether your nerve damage is from alcoholism or not. Most people get at least moderate pain relief from vitamin therapy.
Neuropathy support formula vitamins
These are vitamins specifically formulated to promote the regeneration of damaged nerves and reduce the specific symptoms of neuropathy. All neuropathy support formula vitamins have a healthy dose of vitamin B complex, including the full range of the various B vitamins that can affect nerve function. They also include natural herbs and other pharmaceuticals known or suspected to treat these symptoms.
The self-reported success rate for treating damaged nerves with vitamins is moderately good. About 75 to 80% of patients report some mitigation of symptoms with the use of these vitamins. Both the pain and the numbness eases via vitamin therapy. When I suffered from neuropathy, vitamins were one of the treatments in my arsenal. I encourage you to give them a try, as well.
Vitamin B complex vitamins
One thing to note is that neuropathy support formula vitamins are relatively expensive (compared to other vitamins). Their price may be a bit outside the budget of some readers. If that’s the case for you, there is a more budget-friendly alternative that also gives good results.
Plain-old vitamin B complex vitamins are much cheaper, and also provide many of the same benefits. Much of the formulation of “neuropathy vitamins” consists of the various B vitamins, after all.
Vitamins are only one piece of the puzzle
It is possible to reverse nerve damage. I did it and so have many others.
However, it takes patience, perseverance, and usually many months before your symptoms go away. Vitamin supplements help speed your recovery time.
But remember, the most important thing you need to do to reverse peripheral neuropathy is make wholesale lifestyle changes. You’ve got to diagnose what is causing your nerve damage. It could be diabetes, alcoholism, or heavy metal poisoning.
Then you’ve got to change your lifestyle to give your body and damage nerves chance to heal. True healing will only come from within, and over time. Use vitamins, topical cream, and pain medication as a temporary treatment for the symptoms in the meantime.
