Store-bought peanut butter is a product that needs to be chosen wisely so as to avoid unhealthy additives and ingredients commonly included in commercial brands. Many people omit to look at the list of ingredients when shopping for peanut butter because they just assume it’s healthy. But that is not true at all.
It is important to choose an all-natural, and preferably organic peanut butter. Ideally, the list of ingredients should include only peanuts and salt. Let’s take a look at the health reasons behind this.
It’s just peanut butter, so how could it possibly be unhealthy?
Most commercial brands of peanut butter have a very long shelf life so as to decrease product turnover and increase corporate profits. In order to do this, they add preservatives and the especially dangerous “hydrogenated oils” which aid to prevent the oils in the peanut butter from separating. Any time you see hydrogenated oils in a product that is also high in fat content, it almost surely contains trans fat.
Trans fat is associated with clogged arteries, increased cholesterol, and cardiovascular problems. It is recommended that trans fat be excluded completely from a healthy diet. The problem with most peanut butter brands is that they are packed with trans fat.
But there are also other unhealthy ingredients including sugar, artificial colorings and flavorings, and additional preservatives. All of these negative ingredients can be avoided by eating organic and all-natural peanut butter.
Always choose natural, and preferably, organic peanut butter
The best choice is to make homemade peanut butter yourself, right in your own kitchen. It much easier to do than you would think. All it requires is a food processor, peanuts, salt, and oil. If you make homemade peanut butter, you will most likely never go back to a store-bought brand.
But if you are not inclined to do it yourself, you should always choose an all natural brand of peanut butter. Most big supermarkets will have at least one natural or organic selection for you to choose from. Look on the list of ingredients and make sure there is nothing but peanuts, salt, and maybe vegetable oil.
There are some inconveniences to natural peanut butter. For instance, the oils will naturally separate and the peanut butter will need to be stirred prior to use to regain proper consistency. But this is normal for natural peanut butter.Organic peanut butter will also not last as long because it does not have any added preservatives or hydrogenated oils. It must be refrigerated after opening whereas many peanut butter brands can be kept on the shelf.
But these inconveniences are a small price to pay to know that you are ensuring the health of you and your family.
Natural Peanut Butter Taste Can Not Be Beat
The taste of natural peanut butter is wonderful and so much better than the processed kind. Most people who try freshly made peanut butter never want to go back to the commercial brands.
