Is walking enough exercise to really help you lose weight, increase your endurance, and get back into shape? Or will you need to do more strenuous activities such as biking, jogging, or weight training to go along with it?
The answer is that walking can certainly be enough exercise, in fact it is great exercise, but it all depends on how far you push yourself. In order to get the full health benefits of walking, you need to walk at a pace that is brisk enough to get your heart moving and you sweat flowing, whatever that speed may be.
At first you may need to start out walking quite slow and see your muscles and joints get back in shape. But you will find that as you continue with your walking program, your endurance level will markedly improve and you will have to keep increasing the length of your walks and the speed at which you travel in order to maintain the same amount of energy expenditure.
In other words, as your endurance gets better, your muscles will become more efficient and will burn less energy than before to walk the same distance. So you will need to either increase your walking time, or supplement your walks with other exercises such as jogging or swimming.
Walking is a great low intensity cardiovascular exercise that anyone can do, even people that are extremely out of shape and haven’t exercised in a long time. It is a great way to start out slowly and gradually build up your muscles and flexibility. Use it as a stepping stone to other activities in your exercise program.
If you are determined to get your exercise solely by walking, however, it is definitely feasible but you will need to go on walks quite regularly, at least every other day, and they will need to be good long walks in the range of 45 minutes to an hour.
If you walk at a brisk pace that gets your juices flowing, and you do so regularly, you can get your body in very good shape that way. Just make a plan and stick to it, and don’t let the excuses get in the way. You will be able to walk yourself to weight loss, a new body, and quite possibly a new and healthier outlook as well.
