Is Olive Oil Good For Acne?

It may be surprising to learn that olive oil can be helpful to people who suffer from acne.  It seems counter intuitive that an oil might help to alleviate the oily skin of acne.

But olive oil is recognized around the world not only for its nutritional value, but for the wonderful effects that it has on the hair and skin as well.  In fact, olive oil is included as an essential ingredient in many skin lotions and soaps for this very reason.  Many people find that if they add extra-virgin olive oil to their daily diet plan, they will see improvements in their skin tone in a matter of a couple of weeks.  Hair also gains a fuller sheen.

Olive oil is good for the skin

There are several reasons why olive oil is healthy for skin.  It absorbs ultraviolet radiation from the sun and there are some studies that suggest it also helps to lower cellular metabolic rate.  Extra-virgin olive oil is also high in antioxidants which counteract the effects of free radicals which promote cellular aging and cancer.  Olive oil is also very high in vitamin E which is known to be valuable for the promotion of healthy skin.

Olive oil can be helpful for acne

Olive oil can soothe your acne, reduce itching, and soften and help heal the pock marks and scarring from acne.  Try to incorporate a couple tablespoons of extra-virgin olive oil in your diet daily.  There are also several methods you can use to apply olive oil directly to the acne.

Olive oil is great to use a bath additive.  Simply add a few tablespoons of olive oil to a hot bath and soak your acne affected skin.  Salt or specialized bath salts may be added to the bathwater as well.  These salts help to draw moisture out from the surface of the skin and also act as mild abrasives to remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin.  You may use your fingertips or a washcloth to gently massage the acne to stimulate the skin and promote the removal of dead skin cells.

How to apply olive oil to acne

Extra-virgin olive oil may also be applied directly to the skin to help relieve acne.  For best results, wash and clean your face with hot water to open the pores and make them more receptive to the olive oil.  Apply the olive oil directly to the acne and massaged into the skin using gentle circular motion.  Cover your face with a wet washcloth and allow the olive oil to set for about 10 minutes.  This can be done on a daily basis until you see improvement.
