Honey For Acne: Does It Work?

Is honey really effective at neutralizing the bacteria that causes acne? Can honey be used as a natural substitute for other medicines that specialize in the treatment of acne symptoms?  The fact that many over-the-counter and prescription acne medications contain honey as a partial ingredient is an indication that there is some usefulness to the ingredient for a great many people.

The vast majority of people are likely to have better results from using standard acne creams and supplements rather than by searching for obscure alternate treatments.  However, there are many people who would rather experiment with an all-natural product such as Manuka honey or lemon juice for acne. With these natural treatments, what works for one person will not always work for another. It is a process of trial and error to find a natural product that your acne will respond to.

For a number of people, honey is that product. Honey is a very complex substance and scientists are still attempting to understand its active compounds and how exactly it has a healing effect on the skin. What is known is that for centuries, honey has been successfully used to soothe and heal dry, damaged, and burned skin.

How does honey help fight acne?

Honey has the ability to penetrate skin tissue and treat infections beneath the skin. It has been clinically proven to heal wounds, ulcers, and other skin conditions. Of high relevance in the treatment of acne, honey has high antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antiseptic properties which take the fight to the direct cause of acne.

Honey also contains antioxidants which can improve the health of the epidermis and help the skin to look younger and softer. The stickiness of honey also helps to remove dirt and other impurities from the skin. It acts as a sort of adhesive to help pull the dirt and oil off of the skin.

If you want to experiment with honey to see if your acne responds to it, it is important to give special attention to the type of honey that you select. Ideally, you want to choose a honey that is unprocessed and closest to its natural and unaltered state as possible. That means using an organic and unprocessed brand of honey that has not been altered by heat or otherwise during the manufacturing process.

Allow the honey to set on the skin for about 15 min. Some people prefer to use a mask during this process. If preferred, you may lay warm washcloth over your face during this time. After 15 min., gently wipe away the honey with the washcloth. If your acne successfully response to the honey treatment, you will see an improvement in your acne symptoms within a few days.
